Traditional Cel Painting Guide by espie Traditional Cel Painting Guide by espie
OMG you guys this took so long! D= And it's HUGE :ohnoes: But I wanted to make sure I was thorough - I'm so sorry if it breaks your computer :<
I don't know why I ever thought 'Hey I know what'll be a good idea, I'll illustrate it with chibis too!' but I now hate myself for it lol cause it made the whole thing take twice as long to do nnnngh ><
Oh well. It's done, huzzah! Now I can sleep lol

Do they still do traditional cel animation in Japan?

Great to see that someone else uses a dipping quill pen! I used to have a glass calligraphy dip pen that worked beautifully, but the tip broke. Most everyone I've met has been using refillable ink pens. Many without nibs, just a felt tip. >^-^<
Really the only difference in my method was I always did the ink and paint on the same side of the cel.
Very nice tutorial!

Yay, a kindred spirit! <3 *high fives* It's nice to meet someone else who inks the old fashioned way/paints cels, it seems to be a bit of a dying art nowadays sadly. Admittedly mine's just a standard inexpensive quill - it works decently enough but can be tempramental and scratchy on occasions; I really should invest in a better one now I've taken to inking my sketches with it too. Thanks for the feedback anywho! =D Do you have any of your cels in your gallery? I love looking at other peoples work but there seem to be precious few examples around (or that I can turn up with DA's search anywho!)

I set up a new gallery folder just for some of the cels I have done. There are several not on my DA page, but I am not sure where the scans of those ended up. I'll have to do some digging.

Hmmm, I dunno, maybe half an hour? I was really on a roll with these chibi's lol so I sketched her really quickly and colouring took like 2 minutes since it's all flats. Finelining would have been what took most of the time :meow:

Aww thank you, glad you like it! :aww: Cel painting seems to be one of those underdone mediums, but it's great fun once you get the motivation/confidence to do it =3

It seems to ask for some materials...
But I guess there is a way to try with simple stuff before start to buy expensive but pro stuff.
I've read that it was possible with acrylics ? I'm gonna have my first try with them ^ ^, even if it's not perfect, it's a first try ^ ^

Thank you very much for sharing !

Aye, like I said it you can do it with acrylics, although people seem to recommend mixing it with washing up liquid first for better results. I've never tried this so can't offer any advice regards quantities and such but I'm sure there'll be information out there somewhere regards doing so =3 And it makes sense to do your first one or two with cheaper materials anyway I suppose, as that way you don't feel as bad if you make mistakes, and it gives you a chance to decide if you like cel painting or not befoe you splash out on anything too pricey =D

This is really clear and easy to follow and your picture looks amazing! I wish I could do this but I wouldn't be able to afford the supplies and I don't have much patience either. Maybe someday.

Thank you hun! :cuddle: And yeah, getting setup with the supplies can be a bit costly, but it's all worth it in the end (usually lol) :meow:

This was an awesome tutorial! I'm definitely going to use this as a reference to improve on my cel-shading. ^^ Thank you so much! I love your style and your step-by-step tutorial is very well done. I also love your little inserts of Virizion, she's so adorable! *hugs her* =3

I may not use cel paints...but this was very thorough. I never knew you flipped your lineart to the back...but it does make sense if you want to keep it smooth. I keep thinking you did this digitally... XD You did a good job, and nice helpful tips too. ^^

Aww thank you! <3 It's good to know I wasn't just rambling on most of the time lol (like I usually do :XD:) Had to resist the urge to go into a whole other section about how to store them safely though as I figured that would be overkill X3

You're welcome. <3 Oh no you're fine, you did it well in my opinion. Since you actually have been using them for awhile. XD If you want to add that, I think that would be fine since it might help someone to save it for a friend or something. X3

Ah awesome <3 I was just worried as while I was making this I just kept extending the canvas down and down and I was all 'Omg, where's it going to end?!? :XD:' lol
But yay! Might make a teenie tiny accompanying guide at a later date to cover anything like storing which is maybe not as essential to making cels, but is still good to know. Failing that I'll dig up a link on cel care and pop it in the description ;3

Well you wanted to make sure you got down what you wanted to say and I believe it was very informative but simple. (if that even makes sense :XD:)
It is a good thing to know for certain things. ^^ Links work just as well. ;3

That...That's amazing. (Truth be told, I had no idea what cel painting was before I read this. >w>) I definitely want to do this now! But I dunno if I have the money. Copics are one thing, but this is another. One day! Anyway, very amazing tutorial! Nice job. :3

Thank you hun! =D I'm glad you liked it =3 I'm not sure how much cel paint is on the American site I linked, but over here it works out about 7 per 100ml so yes... rather pricey :XD: But very satisfying when you've finished a cel, so it's worth the money if you can afford to do it... Assuming nothing goes hideously wrong while you're making it anyhow lol X3

Indeed! And Iunno, I'll look it up eventually. And I bet! It looks so good! I'd probably make a little mistake and then mess it all up my not fixing it right. xD But yeah, I'll try to get some someday. Maybe for Christmas? Hm...
