So, I've been in Japan C: It was amaaaazing ~ hung out with some friends who live there and met some new ones, bought a ridiculous amount of stuff, and went and saw the new Pokemon movie no less than 3 times lol. Which I think is actually a record for me... I'm not one of those people who goes and sees the same thing over and over at the cinema. I think my previous record was seeing something twice. And I would still totally go and see the new movie again, because I loved it that much.
I love the new Mewtwo ~ obviously the original Mewtwo's always going to be my favourite, but the new Mewtwo is such a sweetheart. I just love her personality, and she's totally kick ass to boot. I know there's been a fair bit of grumbling about the idea of a second Mewtwo and the inconsistencies of her existence story wise and the lack of explanation given regards her creation, and I'll admit I have my own issues with that ~ but if you can look past that and enjoy it for what it is, it's a really great movie. The story's a good, solid story and I really enjoyed it. There wasn't ever a point where it felt like there was a lull in the movie, and the balance between story and action was spot on. All the characters are likable - I even found myself liking and caring about the Genesect, who I really didn't care about in the slightest beforehand. Female Mewtwo meanwhile is not a simple copy-paste of the original Mewtwo, but is her own character. It is easy to see her as similar based on the Prologue, but in the movie her character has developed beyond that, and she is much more caring, patient, and happy when she's with her Pokemon friends. She's much less angsty, grumpy and mistrustful than original Mewtwo, despite her initial contact with humans being crueler than his, and seems for the most part content enough with her own existence. Of course I love original Mewtwo for all the above, but it's nice to see the new Mewtwo be developed differently and still be such a vastly likable character C: I did wonder if she might get overshadowed by him personality wise as he is such a strong and well developed character and people are inevitably going to be comparing the two, but as far as I'm concerned that didn't end up being the case.
The animation as well was absolutely beautiful, especially the extreme speed battle sequences. The level of details (such as the interiors of rooms in the windows of buildings that were only seen for a second or two) and the effects used were just gorgeous, and it was nice how they kept it varied by shifting between actual speed, 'bullet time' and little jumps in action where the characters would briefly appear for a second or two, then disappear and reappear briefly as they paused from racing around too fast to be seen. The only thing I can criticize is that there were a few occasions with characters being off model (mainly Mewtwo at the start in profile shots), but I assume I'm just all the worst for being bothered by this as an animator myself X3 But compared to the previous movie it was a much higher standard, and visually getting back on par with, if not surpassing, the 14th movie.
ALSO. On a slightly biased note, one of my top 5 favourite Pokemon, Persian, was in this film. I had expected him to just be a background character, but was still excited enough just that he was there. But as it was he got a fair bit of decent screen time! He battled against the Genesect, even taking one on by himself and managing to overpower it, and then continued to be awesome in fighting the fires. He was soooo cool lol ~ it made me so happy! ^▽^
Anywho! Overall, in my opinion it's one of the best Pokemon movies in years, and may even be my second favorite after MSB. I'm not sure, I'll have to re-watch the Lucario movie, but it's definitely up there. And the Eevee short is without a doubt my favourite of all the shorts they've done, even if it does get rather trippy at the end lol XD But the adorableness and wonderful music and animation make up for that C;
So that's my feelings on the movie! :> This next bit is more for the few hardcore fans I know who watch my DA lol, as among all the discussions I've seen a couple of things that have been misinterpreted which I may as well clarify. There are some mild spoilers, and one big one further down which is clearly marked, so read on at your peril ~
So! First things first - the Prologue and the movie ARE consistent with each other. I've seen people question both the timeline of events with her meeting Virgil vs. the back story shown in the movie, and the issue of her creators supposedly being killed yet hiring Danku, and suggest there are contradictions between the two, but there actually aren't. I did type out a proper explanation but it ended up stupidly long and this journal is long enough, so I'll just explain in more detail in comments if anyone asks X3 But short version: the storm she's shown flying in in the movie is the storm she's flying in at the end of the Prologue. The events of the Prologue slot in between her escaping and finding the cave of Pokemon in the mountain. It's left ambiguous in the movie with no direct references being made to the Prologue so as not to cause confusion to people who haven't seen it. And the 3 scientists are not confirmed to be killed in the movie, but even if they were, it's unlikely they made up the full team responsible for her creation. Danku was most likely hired by the financier of the project.
Also this one's a big ***SPOILER!!!*** which I'm posting just because I feel like it needs covering in a little more detail, so don't read if you don't want to know the end of the movie! You've been warned!!!
***At the end of the movie, Red Genesect's change of heart isn't just because he sees a pretty sunrise in space. Mewtwo explains to him that the whole world is their home, not just one specific place, and seeing the world in its entirety he finally gains some perspective and realizes his place in it. I'll concede it's still a pretty quick change of heart, but still, it's better than 'Ooh, pretty sunrise - okay lets be friends! ^v^' lol Anyway, Mewtwo says to Red Genesect about going back to their home and she offers him her hand. He takes it and agrees, and they start to fall back to Earth ~ they're not falling at that point because they've forgotten how to fly or anything lol (I've seen a couple of people suggest/question this X3) they're just letting gravity do its thing. But Mewtwo then falls unconscious because she's so exhausted and Red Genesect latches on to her to try and help, but assumedly doesn't have the strength to pull both her and himself out of their nose dive which is why he calls the other Pokemon to step in to help. This scene was actually ridiculously adorable, how Red Genesect stayed with Mewtwo and cuddled her as they fell. So many feels ;_; I think all of summaries I've seen however have skipped over the fact that Mewtwo falls unconscious, hence why they end up needing help and couldn't just fly/float normally to stop themselves from falling.***
And thus ends the ***SPOILER!!!***
Anyway this is long and rambly, but hopefully it's been of some interest to you Pokemon fans out there who watch me and are curious about the new movie, and maybe helped clear up some uncertainties plot wise. I am more than happy to discuss anything about the movie if anyone wants to! ^v^ Or debate the inconsistencies or w/e ~ just drop me a comment/PM <3 But I would definitely recommend the movie, assuming the dub doesn't screw it up. While it's a shame not to see the original Mewtwo make a reappearance, and while I very much hope he does one day, the new Mewtwo is lovely and I think people will like her if they just give her a chance! She is a good character, and hopefully we'll see more of her down the line <3
